Get to know Illinois and federal EV programs available now with help from our experts at Karl Knauz BMW.
Benefits for Electric Vehicle Owners
If you are interested in an electric vehicle, now is a great time to invest in a clean vehicle for your lifestyle. Federal and state government programs are in place to help promote the transition to low or zero-emissions personal transportation. Through the federal government's Clean Vehicle Act, many new and used EVs and PHEVs qualify for tax savings. The state of Illinois also supports EV ownership with its own rebate program and several other perks for adopting cleaner vehicles. Find your next new or used EV at Karl Knauz BMW and save with special programs and incentives, including the following:
- Illinois State Rebates: Consumer rebates through Electrify Illinois
- Alternative Fuel Corridors: EV infrastructure through the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to help EV drivers find charging stations
- Federal Tax Incentives: Through the Clean Vehicle Act, Illinois drivers can get $7,500 in new EV tax incentives or up to $4,000 for a used EV
- Battery electric vehicles (BEV) are exempt from state emissions inspections
- Ameren Illinois EV Rate Residential Program: Special rates on residential electricity use for EV owners

Illinois Electric Car Rebates
Unlike the Federal Tax Incentive, which has specific manufacturing criteria, the Illinois Electric Car Rebate applies to all new or used battery electric vehicles (BEVs). As long as the purchaser is an Illinois resident and the vehicle is purchased from an Illinois dealership like Karl Knauz BMW, the EV is eligible for a $4,000 rebate. The purchaser must apply for the rebate within 90 days of purchasing the vehicle and must provide documentation, which includes a copy of the purchase agreement and the vehicle registration.

Changes to the Federal EV Tax Incentives
In 2024, there are changes to the Clean Vehicle Credit that will allow drivers to opt for instant savings at Karl Knauz BMW rather than waiting for the next tax season to receive the incentive through a lower tax bill. When drivers opt to pass the savings, up to $7,500 for a new EV or $4,000 for a pre-owned EV, the dealership will be able to take the amount of the credit off as a downpayment toward the vehicle, which will instantly lower the monthly payment. The new rule allows more drivers to benefit, more dealerships to build up their businesses, and invest in American-made electric vehicles and EV components.
